Sandals Grande Antigua Review

Sandals Grande Antigua Review

We went to Sandals Grande Antigua this January for my husband’s birthday and what an unforgettable trip it was! Antigua is a magical island with some of the bluest water I’ve ever seen and this resort was definitely a fantastic choice! Sandals is an all inclusive couples only resort chain in the Caribbean that has become one of our favorite resort chains! Below you will find a detailed review from our trip so Sandals Grande Antigua.

Flight and Transfer to Sandals Grande Antigua

As with most places in the Caribbean, flights from the West Coast of USA are quite tedious but this one really took the cake. Our journey to Antigua was supposed to about 13 hours with a long 5 hour layover in Miami. Well that layover turned out to be more like 7 hours because our airplane was having mechanical issues and they had to find us another plane. We finally arrived in Antigua around 4pm and made our way to security. Security was very efficient and we quickly made our way to the Sandals desk. Sandals provides complimentary transportation to and from the airport in comfortable air conditioned vans. The ride from the airport to the hotel is only about 15 minutes.

Check In at Sandals Grande Antigua

This resort is made up of two sides: The Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Each has it’s own lobby. Our driver dropped us off in front of the Mediterranean side and our luggage was tagged with our names. We were offered a cooling towel and a welcome cocktail which was much needed after a very long journey to get to Antigua! Then they gave us an Ipad to complete our check in and we put a card on file. The whole check in process was smooth and efficient and we were led to our room.

Mediterranean Club Level Room at Sandals Grande Antigua

We stayed in room category MO which is the Mediterranean Honeymoon Oceanview Club Level Suite. Now we were definitely not on our honeymoon but most of the rooms in the Mediterranean buildings are very similar unless you have a butler suite. Our room had a four poster kind size bed, stocked bar, double vanities, decent size shower and a jetted tub. We had a small patio with table and two chairs and pretty wonderful view of the resort and ocean. The room itself we found to be kind of outdated to other Sandals resorts and had some minor maintenance issues (which were addressed by Sandals) but we did really like our view and location of our room.

Beach at Sandals Grande Antigua

This beach has seriously some of the most gorgeous blue water I’ve ever seen! It is absolutely stunning to look at! The sand is powdery soft and white. The water was very calm and perfect for water sports! Which are provided by Sandals at no extra cost! I had so much fun playing in the water here and took out the paddle board every chance I got. We also took out the hobby cat as well as the kayaks. Water clarity is not great as the sand churns too much so no snorkeling here but Sandals provides snorkeling tour multiple times a day and they take you to areas where the water is much clearer.

Beach vendors are a topic I see often discussed when it comes to this resort. This resort is located on a public beach with local vendors. A lot of visitors don’t get bothered by them as they enjoy chats with the locals but if you are truly looking to relax and not strike up conversations it can be a little bothersome. We tried to pick chairs on the beach right past the Sandals fence when we wanted to relax as they can’t go past the fence.

As I mentioned, this resort is made out of two sides. We stayed in the Mediterranean Oceanview Village. It is made out of 3 multi-story buildings which are set back and offer great view of the resort and ocean. We loved staying in this part of the resort as it was right by the main (ginarmous) pool, pizza place, coffee shop, the Pub and a very short walk to the beach.

The Caribbean side definitely felt more tropical though so I could see why some guests might prefer it. The grounds of this resort are very well maintained and there is beautiful flowers all throughout! There is many different pools, hammocks and fireplaces as well.

Food at Sandals Grande Antigua

Food at this resort was just incredible! We ate at every single one of their restaurants and every meal was absolutely delicious! See some of our favorites and must eats below:

  • Bayside (French Restaurant) you must order the Onion Soup, the CHÂTEAUBRIAND which is their beef tenderloin with peppercorn sauce and the creme brulee for dessert.
  • Marios (Italian Restaurant) this place has the most amazing antipasti buffet! So many different kinds of cold and hot appetizers, cheeses and breads this alone can be a meal! But make sure you save room for the lava cake because it is to die for!
  • Eleanor’s (Caribbean food) has a wonderful made to order breakfast (mimosa and eggs benedict, anyone?). Their dinner was also wonderful with the crab cake and Blue Mountain Crusted Strip Loin stole the show!
  • Drunken Duck (pub) this place has the BEST wings I’ve ever had! We loved them so much they were our late night snack every night! Seriously I would go back just for the wings alone.
  • OK Corral (Tex-Mex) just do yourself a favor and order the BBQ pork tacos!
  • Soy: sushi, sushi and more sushi! All the food is made fresh in front of you and it was some of the best sushi! Who knew you had to go to the Caribbean for amazing sushi? We went there quite a few times as appetizer before dinner at one of the other restaurants.
  • Pizza at Bella Napoli was perfect every time and our preferred lunch choice!

Drinks at Sandals Grande Antigua

Sandals has an excellent selection of cocktails at every bar and you can also ask your bartender to whip you up something special! We tried a great variety of drinks and especially enjoyed trying the signature cocktail at every restaurant!

We enjoyed one hour hot stone massages as well as used all of their facilities which included steam room, sauna and showers. The spa itself wasn’t as tropical as the one at Sandals Barbados but we really enjoyed our treatments and our masseuses were excellent.

This resort was so much fun! There were so many different activities going on at night and we were never board! From the parade leading to the beach party with delicious food and fire juggler, white chocolate night with incredible singer and dancing in the Mediterranean courtyard, casino night on the Caribbean side, we just had the best time!

In Conclusion

As you can probably tell from this review, we had an incredible trip to Sandals Grande Antigua! This resort is perfect for couples who are looking to reconnect and have some fun in Paradise! We really enjoyed the stunning water, incredible food and all of the activities this resort offered! This was our 3rd Sandals Resort and definitely won’t be our last.

  1. Enjoyed the detailed review. We went to Couples Resorts in Jamaica and really enjoyed it. I’ve always wanted to try Sandals too. (Our next all-inclusive will probably be with the kids though.)

    • We’ve been to Couples Negril and loved it! Sandals tend to be larger resorts, but we loved the intimate feel of Couples! We really want to take the kids to Beaches in the future.

  2. Thanks for this informative review. My wife and I are planning a trip soon and are looking for someplace nice. We have already visited Montego Bay, La Toc, and Ochi so we know and have high expectations for our next trip. the question I have for you is, which of the Sandals resorts do you favor most and why ?

    • Hi David! My favorite resort is Sandals Grenada. It is a compact, intimate and romantic resort with great dining options and lots of different room categories to choose from. The entertainment team was great and my husband particularly enjoyed the calm crystal clear waters for snorkeling right off the beach. I also found the island very interesting and there is some great tours to choose from! My husbands favorite on the other hand is Sandals Barbados. The two resorts there are right next to each other where it feels like 1 large resort! The Royal is brand new modern and beautiful and it features the first Sandals rooftop pool and bowling alley! We really had a wonderful time at both of those places and would return in a heartbeat! Sandals Antigua is the one we probably wouldn’t go back to just because the beach is full of vendors. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  3. Great reviews. Thank you. Out of the 3 you have visited, which one would you say is the most lively atmosphere? Not really in terms of 24X7 party but just the overall vibe, social, prominent age group, etc.

We returned from Sandals Barbados (Royal) and loved it but thought it was a bit too laid back (older crowd then we saw at St. Lucia Grande a year ago).

    Thanks again.
