Super moist banana cake roll with cinnamon cream cheese filling is the best way to use up ripe bananas! This is one delicious and easy dessert that is sure to be a crowd pleaser!

My son Logan is absolutely obsessed with baking. Pretty much every day he asks me “So what are we making today?”. He is at the point that he really wants to learn to cook and does most steps of the recipe himself. It is really sweet and one of my favorite things to do with him. His favorite treats typically involve bananas so I always buy extra to save for baking. This banana cake roll is his new favorite thing! And I totally agree it is absolutely delicious, looks impressive yet it is pretty simple to make. The banana cake is really moist and the cream cheese filling is the best! Its just the right amount of sweet with a hint of cinnamon it truly makes this dessert so special and why you should make it today!

How to make banana cake roll?

  • To make banana cake:
  • Line a jelly roll pan with parchment paper and spray with baking spray.
  • In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.
  • In the bowl of your mixer beat sugar and eggs until thick about 2 minutes.
  • Add in vanilla extract and mashed bananas and beat to combine.
  • Slowly, add in half of the dry ingredients and beat to combine.
  • Add remaining dry ingredients and l beat to combine. Don’t overmix.
  • Pour banana cake batter in prepared pan.
  • Bake cake for 13-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  • Sprinkle powdered sugar on a large clean kitchen towel (similar size to pan you are using)
  • Run a knife along the edges of the cake.
  • Invert hot cake pan on towel, remove parchment paper and roll up the cake.
  • Let cake cool completely in towel.
  • To make cinnamon cream cheese filling:
  • In the bowl of your mixer beat softened cream cheese and butter until fluffy.
  • Add in vanilla extract and cinnamon and beat to combine.
  • Slowly add in powdered sugar and beat to combine.
  • To Assemble:
  • Once cake is cooked completely unroll and spread cinnamon cream cheese frosting evenly on the cake. Roll cake back up and serve!

Can you freeze this cake roll?

Prepared cake roll with filling can be frozen for up to 2 months! Thaw overnight in the fridge before slicing.

Can this cake roll be made ahead?

You can make the cake up to a day in advance, roll up and place in airtight container. The frosting can also be made in advance! Just prepare frosting and store in the fridge until ready to use.

How to Ripen Bananas:

If you don’t have ripe bananas on hand but still want to make this cake roll an easy hack is to bake bananas in the oven! Place unpeeled bananas on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake at 300F for 15-20 minutes. Bananas are ready when they are all black!

Variations on Cream Cheese Frosting:

This cinnamon cream cheese frosting is divine and I recommend using high quality cinnamon! I used some that I picked up from Grenada, they seriously make some of the best.

If you don’t like cinnamon you can leave it out for a pretty classic cream cheese frosting!

Another variation for my coffee lovers is to add 1 tsp of instant espresso powder for a coffee flavored cream cheese frosting! Coffee and bananas go amazing together.

Ingredients

For Banana Cake:

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon ground
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup mashed ripe bananas about 2 medium bananas
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for sprinkling on towel

For Cinnamon Cream Cheese Filling:

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon ground
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

To make banana cake:

  • Preheat oven to 375F.
  • Line a 10×15 jelly roll pan with parchment paper and spray with baking spray.

  • Add in vanilla extract and mashed bananas and beat to combine.
